SINGAPORE, 22 – 26 JULY 2013 Lenovo-MTV CO:LAB‘s four regional winners - Yuji Mitsuhashi (Japan), Ron Roumsub (Thailand), Karan Bedi (India) and Nick Chan (Singapore) – are in town to participate in a five-day workshop to produce an original music video to be aired on MTV, with regional mentors consisting of acclaimed contemporary design and art collective, PHUNK and renowned international DJs, Brendon P (The DJ Dispensary) and Matty Wainwright (The DJ Dispensary).

Here’s what went down for the day one of the workshop. Since they were announced as winners in May, Yuji, Ron, Karan and Nick had started working on the video themed “Pulse of the World”, with their respective mentors via frequent Skype sessions. One of the first tasks involved Nick working with The DJ Dispensary to compose and produce the music track.

The winners finally got to meet Brendon, Matty and two members (Jackson Tan and William Chan) from PHUNK in person today at PHUNK STUDIO, PHUNK’s studio cum art gallery located within the tranquil Tanjong Katong area which served as the team’s meeting place for the morning. Judging from the casual and friendly mood of the meet-and-greet session, it was clear that no ice-breakers were needed.

Over the next four hours, the winners showed off their work in progress on their new Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga laptops and discussed next steps with their mentors who provided feedback for fine-tuning the video, which is currently at about 60% completion.

After a hearty lunch, Karan and Nick headed over to The Gunnery, one of Singapore’s top audio music post production studios where Karan would record a guitar track for the video. Here, they spent some time warming up while waiting for singer-songwriter Hashy Yusof to arrive. Hashy won the hearts of many Singaporeans with her dreamy voice when she took part in local reality singing competition, The Final 1 and she was there to lend her vocals to the music video.

Matty and Brendon stayed close and observed the recording session which took roughly two hours to complete. Thereafter, the team was joined by Yuji and Ron and they discussed the agenda for day two of the workshop before calling it a wrap.

Day two of the Lenovo-MTV CO:LAB workshop started off with people arriving at the studio in the morning where they were serenaded by vocalist Hashy, who happened to be warming up with her guitar. Her lovely voice put smiles on their faces.

Today was the day where Yuji would direct the shoot for the music video which featured Hashy. He began his day by having a quick conversation with the makeup artist on how he wanted Hashy to be styled. Then, he and the crew went about setting up their equipment while Hashy got her hair and makeup done.

There were two crews at work today – one to shoot to actual the music video and another to capture the behind-the-scenes of the music video. A green screen was also put into place to allow the winners to integrate footage of Hashy with other visual elements for the video during post-production.

Hashy was ready when the team got back from lunch. She nailed the bold and fierce look in her red dress, blue gloves and bright red lipstick. Shooting commenced with Hashy standing in front of the green screen and singing to the camera as music played off-screen.

From the way Yuji worked, one could tell that he was a perfectionist. He seldom took breaks and at times, he would give comments and directions to Hashy on how she should move and act in front of the camera. Yuji called for retakes frequently and never once did Hashy or the crew lose their patience, a reflection of everyone’s professionalism. Ron, Nick and Karan observed the shoot while The DJ Dispensary and PHUNK were also present to provide guidance and advice. Meanwhile, the second crew roved in the background capturing footage from different angles.

More than eight hours after they started filming, Yuji finally yelled “Cut! Finished!” and everyone on set broke out in applause. They were now one step closer to completing the music video.

Things moved at a leisurely pace today. The MTV crew first headed over to Phunk Studio in the morning to film the various art installations and paintings before going to the hotel where regional winners Nick, Ron, Yuji and Karan were staying at. At the hotel, the crew shot separate interview segments with Karan and Nick to get their thoughts on their involvement in the Lenovo-MTV CO:LAB project. The regional mentors from PHUNK and DJ Dispensary also showed up to be interviewed whereas Yuji and Ron spent most of the day editing the music video.

With two days left to go before Yuji, Ron and Karan were due to return to their home countries, the team has been pulling all-nighters to finish the production of the music video so it was no surprise that all four regional winners of the Lenovo-MTV CO:LAB competition looked really tired today.

By late afternoon, there was an update that the video was almost completed and the mentors and winners quickly headed back to the editing suite have a look. The suite was packed and people were brimming with excitement as Yuji played the video for everyone to watch.

Suffice to say, the music video must have turned out well because the room erupted in applause when it ended. Mentors Alvin and William from PHUNK and Brendon from DJ Dispensary then gave the winners feedback for fine-tuning the video before everyone left for the wrap up party to celebrate the night away. Matty from DJ Dispensary also met up with the MTV crew at the club to be interviewed.

Tomorrow, the winners will put finishing touches to the music video and take turns with the mentors to be interviewed by the MTV crew. It has been an exciting couple of weeks for those involved in the project and now that the workshop is drawing to a close, audiences will soon be able to watch the final video and the making of on MTV Asia.

Stay tuned for more updates.
